A key takeaway from over three years of e-scooter share operations in New York City is that designated parking corrals lead to more organized parking by e-scooter riders.

NYC DOT is working with local stakeholders in the e-scooter share service areas, as well as looking at travel data to identify areas that would benefit from designated parking corrals.

Parking corrals help minimize sidewalk clutter by providing a space for e-scooters to be parked. GPS and in-app technology requires riders to end their trip in designated spaces like parking corrals. Corrals are listed in each operator’s smartphone app and marked on the street or sidewalk with paint and signs.

NYC DOT installs parking corrals based on detailed technical siting criteria on sidewalks and roadbeds in commercial, recreational, and residential areas to ensure equitable access throughout the service area. All adjacent property owners and community stakeholders are notified of corral plans before installation. NYC DOT aims to balance the various uses and needs of our streets and sidewalks.
